Activities

From the château, you can undertake a wide range of activities. On this page, we mention a few that we consider worth your while. But we also invite you to explore on your own. Via "Location and our surroundings", you will find a more specific overview of restaurants and attractions.

The Pyrenees

The mountainous landscape of French Basque Country begs to be further explored. The Pyrenees offer breathtaking views and provide a unique hiking experience for both seasoned and less experienced hikers. Numerous hiking trails have been laid out. There are also various routes available for cars, motorcycles, E-bikes, or bicycles, catering to different lengths and difficulty levels.

Biarritz

Biarritz is located about an hour's drive from the château. It is a sophisticated French coastal town on the Bay of Biscay in southwest France. Biarritz is a popular seaside resort known for its beaches and its history as a vacation destination for European royalty.

Enjoying the beach, surfing, shopping, trying your luck at the casino, or having a drink on the promenade—Biarritz has it all. The market halls, where you can find delicious fresh produce, are also highly recommended.

Saint Jean de Luz

Just south of Biarritz, you'll find Saint-Jean-de-Luz. It is also a seaside resort with beautiful sandy beaches, slightly less chic but no less charming. Here, you can enjoy the beach, surf, shop, or have a drink on the promenade. The house where Louis XIV stayed before his marriage and the 15th-century church in the center with its wooden galleries are definitely worth a visit.

Isturitz and Oxocelhaya Caves

In less than half an hour, you'll reach the stalactite caves of Isturitz and Oxocelhaya. These prehistoric caves are easily accessible and surprisingly interesting. They offer a glimpse into a different civilization from another time. The Isturitz and Oxocelhaya caves are a significant Paleolithic site where a Neanderthal lower jaw was discovered, along with later modern human finds related to the Aurignacian, Solutrean, and Magdalenian periods. They also contain cave paintings and bone flutes have been found.

Pau

Pau, a familiar place for Tour de France enthusiasts, offers not only a lively center but also the castle of Henry IV. The Château of Pau is a 1370s castle in the heart of Pau, the capital of Pyrénées-Atlantiques and Béarn. King Henry IV of France and Navarre was born here on December 13, 1553. The viscounts of Béarn also resided here. Napoleon Bonaparte stayed here during the summer. Inside the castle, you can enjoy the former grandeur with a guided tour.

Lourdes

About an hour and a half's drive away is Lourdes. Throughout the year, but especially from March to October, pilgrims from all over Europe and other parts of the world come to the sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes to pray and bathe in or wash with the spring water at the cave where miraculous healing properties are attributed. The impressive basilicas are well worth visiting for every visitor—even non-Catholics.
